Meet Balboa, the Camper Van

Balboa is our first Ram Promaster Conversion van, ready to hit the road. This underdog comes as a “dry” camper van, meaning it doesn’t have running water or a bathroom. However, Balboa is fully stocked with everything you need to kickstart your Alaska adventure, including a cozy full-size bed (75” long, 54” wide, and 8” thick, sleep easy our friends). Check out other included items below. The only pieces missing you may want to bring are personal outdoor gear (raincoats, jet boil, hiking boots, etc.), specific phone/device charging cords, and groceries upon arrival.

Designed for two people with convenience and comfort in mind, Balboa comes with the following amenities at no extra charge:

  • (2) cans of bear spray for safety
  • (2) plates and bowls
  • (2) knives and pot/pans
  • (2) pillows and camp chairs
  • (1) 75 Qt. Cooler
  • (1) small propane bottle
  • Small cutting board and Coleman cook stove
  • Tea kettle and pour-over kit
  • Foldable camp table and Alaska road atlas
  • Fishing and hiking book and bear safety handbook
  • Recreational state parking pass
  • Cooking utensils, sheets, and blankets
  • Spare sleeping bag/blanket, jumper cables, and spare tire/changing tool kit
  • Miscellaneous items such as toilet paper, paper towels, spices, cooking oil, rags, cleaning spray, hand sanitizer, and baby wipes

Balboa is also equipped with an auxiliary battery that powers 12v LED lighting in the back, a four-port USB charging station, and an exhaust fan for cooling and ventilation during cooking. The auxiliary battery is wired separately from the main battery, ensuring no risk of draining the main battery.

With an estimated fuel economy of 17-22 MPG, Balboa offers a safe driving experience. It handles well and serves as a fully stocked home on wheels. Not to mention the backup camera, to help make maneuvering the van that much easier.

Please note that Balboa can be driven on any road except for the Dalton Highway (Road to Deadhorse) and the road from Chitina to McCarthy. When driving on gravel, it’s recommended to take it slow for a smoother ride and less wear and tear of the vehicle.

A minimum 4-night stay is required for rentals of Balboa, and all our vans.

Life has one speed… go!

The Story Behind Balboa’s Name

What better name for an underdog than Balboa? Eric’s family thought starting a camper van rental business was foolish at the time. Eric did not hesitate to call this van Balboa as soon as he drove it off the lot. The van build began the next day regardless of what others thought. The rest is history, Balboa was an underdog, but not anymore! He is a beast with stories written!

Balboa’s Reviews

Balboa Was Amazing!

“My partner and I’s recent trip to Alaska would not have been as AMAZING as it was without Eric and his wonderful van, Balboa! From the very start (even before we booked the trip), Eric reached out to see if we had any questions, concerns, and to learn more about what experience we were hoping to have in Alaska. Being a first-time van renter, I had plenty of questions. Eric was prompt and thorough with his replies and went above and beyond to provide even more information about cool places to visit, hikes to go on, and things to do while we were touring around Alaska. In the month leading up to our trip, we corresponded plenty of times – which helped us feel confident in our decision to rent through Outdoorsy and specifically Eric. The van had everything we needed, while still being fairly simple. There was plenty of space for us to unload all of our gear (3 checked bags), get comfy, and feel good about the security the van offered. The van is also very well insulated (we experienced rain and snow during our visit) and we were not cold at all in the evenings. The bed is very comfortable and large enough for two people to sleep comfortably. Charging stations and lights powered by an additional battery in the back allowed us to keep our devices charged while not being in fear of draining the van battery. Cooking supplies, a water cooler, camp chairs, cleaning supplies, maps and atlases in the van, and so many other items we didn’t know we would need were all provided. We had zero problems with this van and are feeling very inspired to buy one just like it. Eric was super accommodating with pickup and drop off times and locations, which helped us out immensely with our flights in and out of Anchorage. I feel as if it is very well worth the price per night and would so much rather invest in this type of travel over a rental car and hotels. We had the flexibility to stay longer in towns we liked, explore places we were not planning on, and explore Alaska in a way that is not possible without a van! We highly recommend renting through Eric and experiencing van life. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience! Seriously. Thank you so much, Eric!!”

Awesome Rig!

“Perfect rig for our adventure, solid unit that felt new with decent enough gas mileage. If not having a lav isn’t an issue, a smaller vehicle such as this provides many advantages…..easier to drive and much easier to park for the night and much easier to roll out in the morning. Van came to us with essential equipment and some nice extras. Eric was punctual and went out of his way to accommodate our schedule. Much appreciated, and a job well done. We’d do it all over.” —Rockwell
