What is the best time of year to rent a camper van in Alaska?
The best time to rent a camper van in Alaska is during the summer months, from late May to early September. This period offers warmer weather, long daylight hours, and all businesses/parks are open. Allowing you to make the most of your adventure.
How far in advance should I book a camper van rental in Alaska?
We recommend booking your camper van at least 3-6 months in advance, especially during the peak summer season, to ensure availability and secure the best rates.
How much does it cost to rent a camper van in Alaska?
Prices vary depending on the season and the type of camper van. Generally, rates range from $150 to $250 per night. Additional fees may apply for mileage, insurance, and extras.
Does Alaska Stoke Vans offer airport pickup/drop off?
Yes, typically we can accommodate airport or hotel pickup/drop off. Once you have a plan, please let us know in advance. If we hear nothing from you, we reach out approx. one week before your arrival date. On occasion we ask you to meet us at our residence, then shuttle you to/from your destination.

Is it safe to encounter wildlife during camper van travels in Alaska?
Wildlife encounters are inherently dangerous, as animals can act unpredictably when approached. It’s essential to act responsibly, keep a safe distance, observe from your vehicle, and never feed or approach wildlife. We do provide bear spray so you are prepared for an unlikely wildlife encounter exploring the wilderness.
Do I need a special license to drive a camper van in Alaska?
No special license is required to drive a standard camper van in Alaska. A valid driver’s license will suffice.
Is it safe to drive a camper van in Alaska’s weather and road conditions?
Yes, camper vans are equipped to handle Alaskan conditions, but it’s important to be prepared for changing weather and rough terrains. Always check road conditions and be cautious, especially in rainy or icy conditions. Plan for construction delays as roads are under constant repair, especially during the summer months.

While there are many campgrounds and designated areas for camping, it’s essential to respect local regulations. Camping is typically allowed in established campgrounds, but be sure to check for specific rules in national parks and state forests. Generally most areas that restrict overnight camping/parking, will have signage posted stating such.
How do I find campgrounds suitable for camper vans in Alaska?
You can find suitable campgrounds by using resources like Recreation.gov, Alaska.org,TravelAlaska.com, and Anchorage.net which provide reviews and details on amenities.
What should I pack for a camper van trip in Alaska?
Essential items include warm clothes (layers), good walking shoes, a raincoat, charging cables, food supplies, and outdoor gear. How do I handle waste and water refills while camping in a van?
Our camper vans are ‘dry’, meaning they don’t have running water or a bathroom. However, we do provide a 5 gallon jug full of potable water for cooking and rinsing dishes. There are plenty of public restrooms and campgrounds that offer roadside rests for stopping to go potty, and fill water as needed.

What are the best routes for a camper van road trip in Alaska?
Popular routes include the Seward Highway, the Glenn Highway, and the Parks Highway, each offering stunning scenery and access to various attractions. Please ask us for a copy of our “guest itinerary template” if interested. It offers insight into our favorite places to go!
How many miles can I expect to drive in a day while touring Alaska in a camper van?
Driving in Alaska can take longer than expected due to road conditions and scenery. Plan for 200-300 miles per day, allowing for plenty of stops to enjoy the views. You can drive more or less if needed. If you drive over your itinerary allotted mileage, a 35 cent per mile fee will be taken from the security deposit.
Insurance & Pets
What type of insurance is required to rent a camper van in Alaska?
Basic insurance is typically included in your rental, but we do offer additional coverage for extra peace of mind if needed. Be sure to review the terms and conditions.
Can I bring pets on a camper van rental in Alaska?
We consider pets. Let us know in advance, and we’ll make a plan with you to ensure your camper van is pet-friendly. Additional fees and/or cancellation of rental may apply if you show up with a pet without prior approval.

Do camper vans offer a comfortable and safe place to sleep?
Yes, camper vans are equipped with comfortable bedding (wide as a queen, and long as a full size mattress), ensuring a comfortable night’s sleep as you enjoy your Alaskan adventure.
Do camper van rental companies in Alaska offer one-way rentals?
While some companies do offer one-way rentals, Alaska Stoke Vans currently does not provide this service.
Are camper van rentals in Alaska suitable for families with children?
Our camper vans are designed for two people, they can accommodate a parent traveling solo with a child for a memorable experience.
